Chronicling the journey through Helena’s book recs.
Summary

I’ve been searching for a book like this; Schalansky, utilizing rare books, travel logs and other forgotten primary sources, researched and wrote about 50 of the most remote islands in the world and their often horrific and complex histories.

The author herself was partially inspired to write this book, which is more of a set of prose than an actual atlas, while stuck immobile in East Germany during the war. It was that intellectual wanderlust that led her to want to explore the world through books rather than physically travel.
